A cool season crop, wheat performs best with below-average temperatures.  It's not impossible for wheat to make a good crop with heat -- it happened in 1985 -- but it takes a lot of rain to stay ahead of high evaporation.  Most years having a hot spring ended with low production:  1963, 1974, 1986, 1991.
There wasn't nearly enough rain to offset heat in 2004:  Click on March-May rainfall.
